2004 CIRP Institutional Profile (3.84MB) (Documentation)

The Cooperative Institutional Research Program ( CIRP), administered by the Higher Education Research Institute, is a national longitudinal study of the American higher education system.The four-page survey instrument covers a broad array of issues and themes:

  • Demographic data;
  • Expectations of college;
  • High school experiences;
  • Degree goals and career plans;
  • College finances;
  • Attitudes, values, life goals; and
  • Reasons for attending college.

The freshman survey instrument helps institutions assess trends in the characteristics, attitudes, values, and aspirations of their entering freshmen. At the same time, the freshman survey is revised annually to reflect the changing needs of institutional participants.

The statistics are based on survey responses of 289,452 first-year students entering 440 four-year colleges and university in the fall of 2004. The figures were statistically adjusted to represent the total population of approximately 1.2 million first-time, full-time students at four-year institutions.

2004 CIRP Freshman Statistical Profile (292KB)

Published by the Chronic le of Higher Education, this profile compares the National survey responses for the 2004 CIRP (above) with those of Duquesne first-time, full-time freshmen. The Duquesne student responses are shown in red.

2004 College Outcomes Survey (20.0MB) (Documentation)

The Student Life Assessment Committee administered the College Outcomes Survey in the Spring of 2004 to 500 freshmen and 500 seniors with a 63% return for freshmen and a 62% return for seniors. Freshmen were introduced to the survey at the end of randomly chosen freshmen English classes. They were asked to complete it at home and return it. Each of the undergraduate school advisors was asked to find a way to distribute and collect the surveys from their seniors. Their methods were varied. The ACT College Outcomes Survey was chosen because it complemented the NSSE (National Survey of Student Experiences used by the Academic Assessment Committee) and had 48 items that pertained to student life. Pages 1 through 10 graphically depict the results. The following narrative discusses the results that are illustrated on the aforementioned pages.

•  (NOTE: The national norms are based on 37,758 student records from 65 4-year post-secondary institutions that administered the College Outcomes Survey between 1/1/99 and 12/31/03. Because the national norms are comprised mostly of seniors, freshmen cannot be compared to these norms. Also, it is important to remember where the freshmen are in their educational process when examining their responses to some of the statements, especially regarding achievement of goals).

2004 CSBV Institutional Profile (2.11MB) (Documentation)

The College Student Beliefs and Values (CSBV) Inventory was designed as a follow-up of third-year undergraduate students who had first enrolled as freshmen at a diverse sample of colleges and universities. It was administered to 755 entering freshman, about 65% of all freshman in August 2004. The instrument was developed by Alexander Austin and Associates at UCLA, Higher Education Research Institute (HERI). Duquesne students' responses are compared to 25,079 students at 25 Catholic Institutions and 98,593 students at all Baccalaureate Institutions in the study.
